Tbilisi sits in the Kura River valley, cupped between the Caucasus foothills. The city's position makes its weather somewhat unpredictable despite following a clear seasonal rhythm. You're at the crossroads of continental and subtropical influences. Winters are cold, occasionally dropping to 0°C (32°F) at night. Summers are hot and relatively dry. The shoulders of the year, spring and early autumn, bring the heaviest rainfall and arguably the most interesting light. Humidity holds steady around 70% year-round. This keeps winters feeling damper than the raw numbers suggest and gives summers a sticky edge. Understand the rainfall pattern before you pack. Spring, May and June, is when Tbilisi gets the bulk of its annual precipitation. Afternoon thunderstorms become a near-daily feature. These aren't prolonged downpours. They tend to arrive, soak everything for an hour, then move on. Summer is drier than most visitors expect. July and August bring the year's peak heat, with highs regularly reaching 31°C (88°F). Rainfall drops to around 41mm per month. Autumn turns golden and mild before November starts the slow slide toward winter. This means grey skies, occasional snow dusting the old town rooftops, and temperatures hovering at or just below freezing most nights. What makes Tbilisi's climate distinctive is how dramatically it shifts within a single day, in spring and autumn. A morning starting in light sweaters can turn into a sweaty afternoon and a cool, jacket-worthy evening. This is less an inconvenience than a feature if you're wandering the Narikala fortress walls or the Abanotubani sulfur bath district. The Caucasus Mountains to the north can push cold air down into the valley quickly. Locals will tell you the wind off the mountains is its own forecast entirely.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
May and September are the sweet spots. May brings Tbilisi to life. Outdoor restaurants fill along Rustaveli Avenue. Temperatures around 23°C (74°F) make walking the Old Town pleasant. The evenings stretch late enough to reward unhurried wandering. September offers similar comfort as the city cools from its summer peak. It has the added draw of harvest season in the surrounding Kakheti wine region.
Adventure and hiking
Late May through early June or September through early October tends to work best. The trails around Tbilisi, those climbing toward Mtatsminda and beyond, are lush and green in spring. July's heat makes midday trekking uncomfortable. September is many hikers' preference. It's drier than spring. The light is exceptional. Temperatures ease before the October rains build again.
Budget travel
January and February offer the leanest crowds and the most negotiating room. Tbilisi in winter has its own appeal. The sulfur baths are at their most inviting when it's cold outside. Orthodox Christmas in early January gives the city an unhurried warmth that peak season doesn't. November is another value month. It catches the tail end of shoulder-season pricing before winter fully sets in.
Leisurely days without a specific agenda
Early October hits a sweet spot that doesn't fit neatly into any single category. Temperatures sit around 20°C (68°F). Rainfall is lower than spring. Visitors are fewer than in summer. The city's parks turn amber and copper along the Mtkvari riverbanks.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Tbilisi.

Year-Round Essentials
A commitment to layering
Pack for the swing. Morning and evening temperatures diverge sharply in spring and autumn. One outfit will not cover both.
A compact umbrella or packable rain jacket
Pack this always. Summer storms strike fast, even in drier months. No exceptions.
Comfortable walking shoes with real grip
Essential. Cobblestones dominate. Stone stairs are everywhere. Narikala and Abanotubani demand proper footwear.
A reusable water bottle
Critical in summer. 31°C (88°F) heat dehydrates fast. Carry water. Refill often.
Sunscreen
Pack from April. Altitude intensifies light. Hillside walks above the city burn faster than expected.
A lightweight scarf
Bring this. Evening temperatures drop. Churches require covered shoulders. One item solves both.
Spring (March through May)
Clothing
a lightweight but warm mid-layer, a rain jacket you can stuff into a day bag
Footwear
These handle cobblestones. These handle showers. No compromises needed.
Layering Tip
Layer smart. Pack a warm mid-layer that stays light. Waterproof footwear, or a dry backup pair. A packable rain jacket. April tests incomplete packing.
Summer (June through August)
Clothing
breathable natural fabrics, linen and cotton, a light layer for air-conditioned interiors
Footwear
Sandals work. Bring closed shoes too. Rough stone streets punish open footwear.
Accessories
A hat with a brim
Layering Tip
Add a light layer. Air-conditioned interiors shock after outdoor heat. The contrast jars.
Autumn (September through November)
Clothing
a medium-weight jacket, enough warm layers to cover the increasingly cold November evenings, a proper coat by late October
Footwear
versatile footwear that handles both dry and wet days
Layering Tip
Think spring again. Medium-weight jacket. Versatile footwear. Warm layers for November evenings. By late October, upgrade to a proper coat. Evening cold arrives faster than days suggest.
Winter (December through February)
Clothing
a real winter coat, lightweight swimwear even in January
Footwear
boots with some grip for the occasional icy cobblestone.
Accessories
warm gloves, a hat
Layering Tip
Pack seriously. Real winter coat. Warm gloves. Hat. Gripped boots for icy cobblestones. Bring swimwear even in January. The Abanotubani baths at 0°C (32°F) make perfect sense.
Plug Type
European Type C and F plugs (two round pins)
Voltage
220V at 50Hz
Adapter Note
UK travelers: Type C adapter. North Americans: adapter plus voltage converter for non-dual-voltage devices. Most phone chargers and laptops handle 220V. Check labels. Skip unnecessary converters.
Skip These Items
a full-size hairdryer, since hotels in Tbilisi reliably provide them heavy dress shoes, which the cobblestones will punish mercilessly Avoid this. One formal jacket without warmth beneath. Evenings turn cold. Fast. Skip heavy winter gear June through August. Heat is the enemy here. Cold is not.
